A few weeks ago I commented on a request from Jack Tracey for speakers at the Open Mic Night of the August 2019 Sussex Azure User Group - with the idea being to share your stories of mistakes you’ve made that have led to P1 incidents. I flippantly said I had plenty of stories but wouldn’t be able to travel down to Brighton for the meetup - and Jack asked if I could record something or do something remotely on the night.
Now, in the past I’d probably have avoided doing this - as someone who has only rarely given a presentation/talk at a user event and having always been nervous in the past, I was more than a little nervous, and strangely more so recording my own voice (and hearing it back - like many people, I don’t like hearing my own voice back and never think I sound like that!).
As part of my increased focus on learning new things/doing new things in relation to IT, I decided I’d give it a go!
Jack seemed pleased with what he seen, but in truth I was still nervous about how it would go down on the night itself - turns out I needn’t have been:
A very chilled, funny and enjoyable evening tonight at this evenings meetup! A big thanks to @cirrius_tech for your remote submission also, it went down a storm and sparked lots of similar stories! #AzureFamily #Azure #UserGroup #community pic.twitter.com/7dONZSdUL1

I’m sure there’s plenty room to improve - but I’m glad I did it and I’m sure there are aspects of my talk you can relate to; not only the stories but also my wrap-up slide on things I’ve learned over my years in IT - especially in relation to incident response.
I’d like to thank Jack once again for the opportunity, encouragement and support!
Without further ado the full video session is available below - I hope it makes you laugh and perhaps sparks similar memories from your career!
As ever, thanks for reading and feel free to leave comments below.
